“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
(Lamentations 3:21-24)
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”
But this I call to mind, therefore I have hope:
Having sunk so low in his soul (Lamentations 3:20), and after pouring out his lament from those depths, Jeremiah now recalls something- something vital – and begins to encourage his heart with this hope: he reminds himself that the steadfast love of God, will never, ever end, and his unfailing mercies are brand new, every single morning.
As Jeremiah recalls this wondrous truth, he remembers that he can therefore look to the future with renewed hope. Every day.
God doesn’t expect us to pretend everything is alright when it is not; to push down our sadness, or disappointments, hurts, or worries. He has a ready ear for our pain and lament. But… we too have the hope that Jeremiah carried, deep inside him. Every child of God can recall – “call this to mind” – and know that God’s steadfast love and mercy will never fail us. What a hope!
