Martin Luther is quoted as saying: “I have so much to do today that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”
I love the irony in this quote. When you look at your busy schedule today, and apply that statement to it, how does it make you feel – panicked? Pressured? Or Peaceful? It’s quite thought provoking isn’t it?
The less time spent with Jesus, the more drained we become.
There is Rest in Jesus’ Presence
How often is time spent in prayer the first thing to be cut from our day when we’re running short of time? But have you ever noticed that the less time you spend with Jesus, the more drained and depleted you feel?
And yet Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11-28
We can’t keep giving out without being filled. We need time spent with Jesus, in order to be filled with Living Water for pouring out.
Jesus told busy Martha that her sister had chosen the one thing that is needed: “There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10-42
One thing I ask of the Lord……
David, king of Israel and Psalmist understood this too. In Psalm 27, he prays “One thing I ask of the Lord. This is what I seek. That I may dwell in the house of the Lord forever. To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and behold Him in His temple.” Psalm 27-4
Whatever is on our schedules today, when we make Jesus our “One Thing” we can begin to rest, and not strive. All our work becomes an act of worship to Him, whether corporate business, serving others, or scrubbing floors.

Wonderful post, Jill. And you pointed out the one, and only, thing that is important in our day, that is time with the Lord. Thanks for reminding me that He wants us to focus on Him, and not on the earthly issues. Blessings to you today!

This is so true. There are times when I feel like a child and keep forgetting to put him first. But it is paramount if we are to do His work each day.
