“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18
During this strange time of lockdown, I’ve been tackling our garden, slowly redesigning it. Over the years, it’s become unruly and looks more like a cordoned off piece of field, rather than a domestic garden. Brambles, and other horrible weeds have invaded our garden from the surrounding fields and have choked the life out of some of the shrubs we planted years ago.
Yesterday, I was amazed to discover a large clump of lilies, hidden, deep under a hedge and thriving in the semi darkness. The thing is, the conditions were just right for those lilies. It may have looked as though they were lost, under that hedge. I may not have known they were there, but The Lord knew. He caused them to grow and thrive in the shade, away from the noonday sun, in exactly the right soil.
Today, as this virus continues, you might feel as though you’re never going to come out of your home again. You may feel alone, forgotten, “hidden away.” But this is not true…..if are a child of God, then like those lilies, you are in exactly the right ‘conditions’. The Lord knows exactly where you are. You aren’t buried, you’re planted! You aren’t alone, you’re hidden away with Him, and He is just waiting to speak to you.
It’s a wonderful opportunity
I hear, time and time again, friends speak about this, fellow writers write about it….. many, many of God’s people are using this time to draw closer to God; to rediscover Him. To “grow in the grace and knowledge” of Jesus.
This grace that saves, also makes us holy and empowers us for everyday living, enabling us to be obedient and joyful in trying times, causing us to thrive! We grow in grace as we seek to follow Jesus faithfully.
Knowledge (Growing in knowing Him)
It’s important to know who God is, and however long we’ve known Him, we never stop discovering Him! It’s not just about growing in knowledge, but about “growing in knowing Him.”
Think of the person you know best. Now, imagine them in a crisis. How would they act? You know how, don’t you?Because you know that person so well.
In the same way, we need to know who our God is; all that’s true about Him, including His sovereignty, justice, grace, love, wrath, mercy, joy, patience, unchangeableness, providence, and, importantly how He acts ~ what He does. We can only do this by getting to know Him, and we get to know Him through 1) reading the Bible 2) personal experience of Him – listening to His voice.
When we know the nature of God, then, when we feel a bit of a ‘wobble’ coming on, or that little sneaking frisson of fear that tries to rob us of our peace, we can remind ourselves who He is and that we are His!
Be very blessed today, wherever and whoever you are, as you grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
