“I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.” Psalm 145:1-2
This morning, having had a head cold over the weekend, I woke up feeling a little bit “blah.” In my heart of hearts I knew that my approach, as I opened the Word of God to read, was…well, there’s no way to describe it other than half-hearted.
To be truthful, I skimmed over verse 1- 2, because having read, and re-read these, I was excited to move on to verse 3 – 4. But my eyes were drawn to a phrase in verses 1 and 2. The words: “I will.”
David declares “I will extol you, my God and King,” and in verse two, “Every day I will bless you and praise your name”
He repeats this phrase in verse Verse 5 “On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.”
And in verse 21 : “My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,”
I will
Suddenly I was reminded of an important truth. Worship involves engaging the will. “I will”. We praise, worship and extol God’s wonderful name because of who He is, but it involves a daily choice; a resolution, to bless God, wherever we are, whatever our circumstances, just because He deserves to be worshipped.
In this beautiful Psalm, David sets out verse by verse, many of the wonderful attributes of our God, and the reasons why our lips overflow with praise for Him, when we engage our will:
* Because His greatness is unsearchable – verse 3
* Because of His mighty acts – verse 4
* Because of the glorious splendour of His majesty – verse 5
* Because of His awesome deeds and His greatness – verse 6
* Because of His abundant goodness and righteousness – verse7
* Because He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love – verse 8
* Because He is good to all and His mercy is over all He has made – verse 9
* Because of the glory of His Kingdom and His power- because of His mighty deeds – verses 11-12
* Because His kingdom is everlasting and His dominion endures throughout all generations. Because He is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works – verse 13
* Because He upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down – verse 14
* Because the eyes of all look to Him, and He gives them their food in due season – verse 15
* Because He opens His hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing – verse 16
* Because He is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works – verse 17
* Because He’s near to all who call on him in truth – verse 18
* Because He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them – verse 19
* Because He preserves all who love Him – verse 20
