Identity Theft! (Identity in Christ Series part 1)

Cyber crime and identity theft has become a widespread and common problem in our modern society. We’re always being warned to be on our guard against it aren’t we?
I hope this has never happened to you. Imagine the feeling of discovering that someone out there has stolen your identity! Your bank account cleared out in a few clicks of a keyboard, your social media and online shopping accounts hacked; all in just a few minutes. And even with the help of the police, the mess identity theft leaves can take months to untangle.
Sounds awful doesn’t it?

News flash: Countless Christian men and women are robbed daily of their identity!

Like that click of a keyboard, spiritual identity theft happens quickly- it usually starts with a little thought- maybe something along the lines of ‘could God really love me?’ This leads into other thoughts, which escalate into a huge mess of self-dislike, comparison, rehashing of the past, doubts, and before you know it you’ve forgotten who you are!

Who Are You?
While it’s important to protect our private, personal details from identity theft, it’s vital to know and to guard our true identity; the person God created us to be, both individually and collectively as His church. Your identity is about who you became when you put your faith in Jesus Christ.

You are a son or daughter of the most high God, with all the privileges that come with that. But do you really believe it, or has your identity been stolen?

The Spiritual Identity Thief

The Bible warns us to be on our guard against another sort of enemy,

a spiritual thief, our enemy Satan whom Jesus describes in John 8:44 as not just as a liar, but ‘the father of lies’.
John 10:10
The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

This enemy of ours constantly tries to convince men and women of God that we are ‘less than’, that we don’t quite measure up or make the grade. It is a constant drip-feed, ‘night and day’ of lies, accusation and condemnation from this thief and liar, for he knows what lies ahead for him.  Revelation 12:10 “It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night.

The thief fears the Bible believing Christian who really grasps hold of the truth of who he or she is and begins to live out that truth!

Secure in your identity.

If you knew that you had a massive inheritance in your bank account would you continue to live scrimping and scraping, worrying about tomorrow? Of course not! Yet that’s exactly how many of us live as Christians.; Robbed, scraping by, struggling along like spiritual paupers.

We have a massive inheritance in our spiritual bank accounts, given to us by our lavishly generous Father. We are children of God, with free access to His presence, His love, mercy and goodness. He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing, He has equipped us with spiritual gifts, He lavishes His love upon us. He has freed us from fear and He empowers us to touch and effect to lives of those around us … yet so many continue to live like spiritual paupers, robbed by a liar!

Ephesians1:3-8 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.

Over the next little while I will be coming back to this topic, exploring our identity in Christ. I hope you’ll join me on the journey!

Jill 💜
