In a Field of Horses be a Unicorn
I was browsing Pinterest the other day, looking for decor ideas as we’re finally getting around to painting our living room after 11 years. Have you noticed that there are unicorns everywhere? One particular big poster stood out, which had the words “in a field of horses, be a unicorn!”
For a split second, I though “oooh yes please, I want to be that unicorn in a field full of horses!”
But then I started thinking about the field full of horses belonging to our neighbour right behind our house, each one of them unique, with his or her own special character. I love watching them.

How special and precious horses are. And, more importantly, how real.
Down through history horses have always been a very necessary companion to man. They are hard workers; courageous in war and strong ‘farmhands.’ They are steady, brave and sure.
Unicorns on the other hand are mythical, make-believe creatures; the stuff of fairytales who live in Pinterest Land.

In a Field of Horses …. Be a Horse!
Modern society has become selfie crazed. The newest mobile phones even have advanced ‘selfie cameras’. There’s a drive to share every little detail of our lives on social media.

We can get so sucked into this obsession with sharing our lives so that we don’t remember how to keep them. Proverbs 4:23 “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

There’s a strong need in people, fuelled by social media, to stand out, be the best, be different.

What our broken world is desperately crying out for is Christian men and women who are brave enough, strong enough, assured enough in who they are in Christ to ‘just’ be a horse in a field of horses – steady, brave and sure.

There’s no doubt about it, unicorns look beautiful with their sparkly wings and regal horn. But keep in mind that they are not real. You on the other hand, are real.
There’s nothing wrong (despite what social media screams at you) with steadily plodding on, alongside your fellow ‘horses’, just doing what you do because that’s what God has called you to.
In fact that kind of stickability takes courage.
We need to watch that we don’t become so consumed with being all sparkly and able to fly that we lose sight of what we truly are; lest we forget the steady patience, faithfulness and hard work of ploughing and harvesting the fields.
Matthew 9:35 “When he [Jesus] looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd. “What a huge harvest!” he said to his disciples. “How few workers! On your knees and pray for harvest hands!”

In conclusion, I had to ask myself the question, do you want to be a horse or a unicorn? Do you know, I think I’d rather be a horse. 😉
