“I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever”
(Final part in our devotional set focussed on Psalm 121)
Kept By the Lord of Hosts. (Verses 7-8)
“The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. “
God is a Shade from Life’s Heat
I love the use of this word “keeps” here, and the comparison in verse 7 that the Psalmist draws between the shade that the high mountains offer from the heat of the day to the shelter the Lord gives to us.
Psalm 125:2 tells us, “Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever.” and Isaiah 25:4 says: “You are a refuge from the storm and a shelter from the heat.“
Our Mighty God is a shelter from all of life’s heat! Where else would we go when the storms hit? Why would we even want to turn to anyone else? In verse 8, David goes on to describe how the Lord keeps us in our daily life – as we “come and go”. Have you ever stopped to consider what it means to be “kept” by God?
In English, To KEEP something or someone, means:
• To retain possession of, or to take into one’s charge.
• To provide all necessities for – to raise and feed and care for.
• To protect and preserve .
In the original Greek KEEP is phroureo, as used in 1 Peter 1:4–5 meaning:
• To establish a military outpost.
• To guard, hem in, protect with a garrison.
• To establish a fortress with a full military line, with full military apparatus.
• To discern the enemy far in advance and protect from danger.
Wow! We are kept by The Lord of Hosts! All of the above is ours. If you belong to God, having put your faith in Jesus Christ His son, you, His child, are guarded by Heaven’s armies, a powerful, fully-equipped spiritual army of innumerable horses, chariots, and soldiers in full battle array completely informed of every enemy plan and device in advance.
No weapon formed against you will prosper! (Isaiah 54:17)
He Watches Over You 24/7
Verse 8 also says he “keeps watch over you”. Imagine if you could watch over your child every second of every day! You can’t of course, it’s humanly impossible. Even the most vigilant of parents can be distracted momentarily by ordinary everyday things – a text message, a conversation, stirring the dinner. And typically, it’s usually in those seconds of distraction that your child falls and grazes her knee or, worse. And you end up berating yourself for “not watching her properly.”
But God your Father NEVER, EVER takes his eye off you. Not even for a split second. He literally watches over you 24/7, never deterred, never distracted, in his purpose of caring for you.
This is the One from whom your help comes. So lift your eyes to Him.
