I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.
Part 2 of 3 in our devotional set focussed on Psalm 121
He Watches Over Me (Verse 3)
I remember, years ago, when my oldest son Rory who is now in his late twenties, had croup. I was literally afraid for his life. I listened to my tiny baby son struggling for each breath and was afraid he wouldn’t take his next. So I tried to sit up and watch him all night. Of course I couldn’t manage it. I’m human. I drifted off a few times and woke up to Rory’s rattling, ragged breathing with my own heart pounding.
God, your loving Father, watches you constantly. Not in a fearful way – God isn’t a fretful, worrying parent; But He’s a loving one. He knows every hair on your head, he knows every word you are about to speak, before even you know what you’re going to say. He knows all your thoughts. (Even the not so savoury ones!) And he loves you beyond measure. Psalm 103:11 says that his unfailing love toward you is as high as the height of the heavens above the earth!
He Never Sleeps (verse 3)
Even while you sleep, God never sleeps.
Not only does God not fall asleep ‘on the job’, but while your body is sleeping, your heart can still be awake to God and he can speak to you in dreams, instruct you and fill you with peace.
Job 33:14–18 “For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings. He makes them turn from doing wrong; he keeps them from pride. He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death”
“I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety.”
“You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night”.
How comforting it is to know that not only does my Father God watches over me, but He can even examine, instruct, soothe, quieten and strengthen my heart (as in my soul) while I sleep.
