I’ve known a few women (and one man as well) who have had to take out a restraining order against an abusive ex partner. The one against whom the restraining order is in place, nearly always attempts to cross the line in some way, by intimidation, threats or even actually ignoring the order altogether and barging in uninvited, wreaking havoc and instilling fear in the newly found peaceful environment.
Where am I going with this? Well, did you know that if you are a child of God you have a restraining order in place against someone?
It’s legally binding – unbreakable. Who is this restraining order against?…
It’s Satan, the enemy of our souls, who looks for every opportunity to rob you of your joy and peace. To constantly remind you of your past, bringing old, hurtful memories to mind, of wrongs committed against you or wrongs you yourself committed. He’ll tell you you’re unworthy of God’s love, not good enough for God to work with and through.
He starts by attempting to get over the threshold, sticking his nasty foot in the door with thoughts of fear, jealousy, insecurity, rage, unforgiveness, feelings of helplessness or hopelessness, addiction, pride and even shame for having had those thoughts!
Here are some of the ways the Bible describes him:
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10
“He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44
“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12
But, you do not have to put up with it!
Know Your Legal Standing
Like the trembling ex wife who lets that bully over the threshold, even though he has a restraining order against him, we have a choice. Sounds simplistic I know, but it’s true. The one who has taken out the restraining order just needs to call the police, and allow them to deal with the bully, she does not have to open that door! She needs to remember her legal standing. So it is with the Child of God.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
Being “bullied” by thoughts that you don’t measure up, God couldn’t possibly love you after what you’ve done this week? Plagued by thoughts such as “do you know what kind of person I am behind this smile?”
Yes I do! One just like me, and just like the next child of God – forgiven, loved, accepted by God. Alright, so you messed up this week, but when we confess our sins God is faithful to forgive us (see 1 John 1:9)
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery”. Galatians 5:1
The Christian who knows and believes the word of God is a force to be reckoned with.
It’s important to know the Word of God – what it says about who God is, and who we are in His sight, as His children.
Satan also knows God’s Word, he knows what it says about him and his ultimate demise. He knows he’s defeated. He also knows what it says about you – how deeply and passionately God loves you. His nightmare is the Christian who not only reads the Word of God, but absolutely believes it – all of it.
We are not told to fight the devil, only to resist him. To know our legal standing, and to “stand”. Jesus has already fought and secured the victory, as he breathed out His final words on the cross “It is finished” (John 19:30).
“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all o God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” Ephesians 6:10-11,14-18
Do not let him over the threshold – exercise your legal rights as a child of God.
“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12
If you’re beating yourself up today over your “dodgy” past, or you’ve been buying into the lie that you don’t quite measure up, so God couldn’t really love you, know what the Bible says about who you are in Christ.
Our God is true to His Word; He doesn’t make promises lightly. When He says you have been given the right to be called a child of God, it’s a legally binding, unbreakable contract.
