You are God’s Inheritance

Reading in Deuteronomy this morning, this verse caught my attention.
But the Lord ‘s portion is his people,”
Deuteronomy‬ ‭32:9

I’ve always loved Lamentations 3:24The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”

But I forget sometimes that this is so only because God has made me His portion, first!

Simply translated, portion in these two scriptures means inheritance. You are the Lord’s inheritance. How incredible to come to that place of fully realising that God sees you as His inheritance. His very own; chosen, set apart. The ones He has set his affections upon – His goodness, mercy and favour.

How Are We His?

His by choice – His choice.

You might think you chose Him; “found Him”, as many of our modern worship songs declare, but it’s the other way around. He chose us. He chose you.

His By Purchase

You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.1 Peter 1:18-19

He loved you so much that He willingly paid the highest price possible for you.

There can be no dispute about whether or not you belong to Him. If you have surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, then you are His. It’s a legally binding contract.

The Lord’s portion – that’s you and I, has been fully paid for and redeemed.  2 Timothy 2:19 tells us “The Lord knows those who are his”.  Jesus knows exactly who you are, how many hairs are on your head, how many breaths you’ve taken since you opened your eyes this morning, what you’re going to think next! He knows you. He has not forgotten you and never will. You are sealed by and for Him.

His by Conquest. He Won You!

Of course we know that Jesus conquered sin, death and our enemy Satan, on the cross. But there’s a battle we sometimes forget about. The one He won in us!

How long did Jesus have to lay siege to your heart before you surrendered?

Do you remember that incredible day when Jesus conquered your heart? I remember the day He conquered mine. How could I have thought I could go through this life on my own?

Do you remember when His Love broke down your ramparts, and your conquering King staked His everlasting claim on your heart, planting the blood-red flag of His omnipotent love and mercy right into the depths of the strongholds of self protection you’d built, breaking through; turning the ground softer, more pliable?

How God Cares For His Portion

He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, the Lord alone guided him, no foreign god was with him. Deuteronomy 32:10-12

Our lives were a wasteland before The Lord found us. Not only did He conquer us and purchase us, but because we are His inheritance He takes tender loving care of us.

Have you ever been up close to an eagle? She is a huge, magnificent and fearsome bird. Her eyes are piercing, her massive talons look as though they could snap a man’s neck in seconds if he dared touch her babies.

This is how The Lord watches over you, His inheritance, the apple of His eye.

And like parent eagle teaching its young to fly, He patiently, lovingly trains us in His ways.

How good it is to be reminded today that I am His.
