“…But they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.”  Revelation 12:11

What is an Overcomer?
The verb overcome is defined in the English dictionary as “dealing with a problem or difficulty”. It then lists a few synonyms: get the better of a struggle or conflict, bring under control, bridle, master, conquer, triumph over, defeat.
But what if you’re in the midst of a struggle right now and you don’t feel much like even getting out of bed in the morning, never mind all of the above!?

1 Peter 5:8 tells us that we have a very real enemy; one that prowls around, looking for those he can destroy. We also see in Revelation 12 that our enemy has been defeated. The clock is ticking for Satan – he’s a defeated enemy; verse 12 tells us that “he is filled with rage because he knows that his time left here is limited.”
So he goes to work in every way he can, seeking to hinder our effectiveness for the kingdom of God. This is why the Word of God is vital for us; to read and put into practice what the Lord teaches us through His Word. The principles we find in the Word of God are anchors that keep us steady in every storm:
Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.” Proverbs 30:5
Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.”  Romans 15:4

Overcomers Know From Whom Their Help Comes!
Overcomers face struggles like everyone else, but they don’t allow their troubles to become bigger than the Lord, because they know Him – therefore they know without doubt that He is more powerful than anything they face.
The good news is that you and I don’t have to do it all by ourselves. An overcomer that knows that the Lord is their source of help.

David is a great example of an overcomer;

He knew who his help came from and he declares it, again and again throughout the Psalms.
David had learned from a young age that he could rely on the Lord for strength and enabling power in life threatening situations or in heartbreak. Look at what he declares in the face of fierce battle, after The Lord had shown His faithfulness yet again: “Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.” Psalm 20:6-8
See also: Psalm 121:1I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 25:1 “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul, in you I trust, O My God.”

Paul was an overcomer;

He faced persecution, prison and adversity that I will probably never have to face, yet Paul was able to say with boldness and absolute conviction, “I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.” 2 Timothy 1:12

Newly-Created to Overcome
2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that we are new creations – the old person that you were no longer exists, he or she is dead. This new person that you are is created to be “more than a conqueror” through Christ (see Romans 8:37)

This truth isn’t dependent on whetheror not  I feel like more than a conqueror.
Maybe you are struggling with your own particular battles right now? Perhaps you’ve fallen over and dented your lovely shiny armour a bit?
It really isn’t the end of the world and you are not defeated, even if you feel you aren’t experiencing complete victory at this very moment; Remember it’s a journey, you haven’t arrived there yet!

Overcomers Are Good at Pressing Forward
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.” Philippians 3:12-16
So, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, confess your sin to God where you need to, and move on, without dwelling on what’s past;
1 John 1:9 Tells us “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Overcomers Help Others to Overcome
He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.”  2 Corinthians 1:4-6
I don’t know about you but when I’m struggling with my own issues, suddenly life becomes “all about me.” I sometimes wonder what I’d be like if we were to face persecution in the West, as the early Church faced and many Christians are facing in the world today.
In reading the New Testament and the life of Paul And his peers I’m always amazed at the man; so unconcerned for his own material or physical needs; totally focussed on Jesus and on caring for people, despite every hardship he went through.
Overcomers receive comfort and strength from the Lord and then look around to see who they, in turn can comfort and strengthen.
