“What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew 29:31
I often hear people say “I’m just ordinary.” Actually, to be honest, I’ve sometimes said words to that effect about myself.
Do you ever read about great missionaries, or listen to incredible preachers and think “I wish God would use me like that”?
How does God view the “ordinary“ life? – The stay at home mother, the man who works the night shift in the hospital laundry, the waitress, the small business owner? Are these lives of less importance, value or use to God than those with the big, powerful ministries, reaching the lives of thousands?
Ordinary? No Such Thing!
Well, first if all, there is no such thing as an ordinary human being;
How could you be ordinary? – You were created by – especially hand made by – The Lord God Himself.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:13-16
Created to Be Extraordinary!
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
God isn’t looking for the cleverest, most extrovert, best looking, or most eloquent; what He requires is a heart dedicated to Him, no matter where you are in life.
1 Corinthians 2:26-27 tells us
“Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.”
The great, freeing truth is, not all of us are called to preach to thousands, go on mission trips to the other side of the globe, lead big churches, or become best selling authors;
Think about it – if everyone was on the platform in church; well, it would be a bit of a squeeze (to say the least!) We’d all be elbowing each other and some people would fall off the edge of the stage. It would be utter chaos. How ridiculous it would be! Imagine walking into your church building one Sunday morning to find everyone crammed onto the stage!
My value to God in terms of His “Kingdom purposes” has nothing to do with demographics and everything to do with a heart attitude; Ephesians 5:15-17 “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”
Am I able, in my “behind-the-scenes” place of work, to do those good works that God has prepared for me, as spoken about in Ephesians 2? Of course I am; Even if your workplace forbids speaking about your faith, there are ways we can be ambassadors for the Kingdom of God – Galatians 5:22-23:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
- Showing kindness to your work colleagues and customers at all times.
- A good work ethic – being on time, producing good quality work.
- Walking away from office gossip or smutty conversation – this is sometimes a difficult one because we want to do it in a way that doesn’t come across as holier than thou and self righteous.
So be encouraged today, Ambassador of The Kingdom; if you’ve been feeling“ordinary,” wherever you are and in whatever you’re doing- however menial or “behind the scenes” that might seem to you, you can be Extraordinary because of Who you belong to! It’s a daily choice to submit to God and His leadership. To daily “keep in step with the Spirit”. (Galatians 5:16-26)
