“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And marked off the heavens with a span [of the hand], And calculated the dust of the earth with a measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales?” Isaiah 40:12
The ‘Big Spill’
Have you ever tried to catch spilled water in your bare hands? I tried the futile feat this morning when I accidentally knocked over a full jug of water. The jug seemed to tip in slow motion first and then as it fell onto its side water gushed everywhere. I tried to make a wall with my hands, to stop the water from touching the appliances on the worktop but it was no use; my hands just weren’t big enough or fast enough. In seconds the water had made its inevitable journey across the worktop, wetting everything in its path. It poured down the cupboard doors to form a big puddle on the floor. I don’t know what I thought I could achieve; I think I knew I couldn’t really catch the water and was acting on instinct. I was fast, but not fast enough. I used my initiative but it was no use. No amount of cupping my hands “the right way” would have caught all that water – my hands simply weren’t designed to hold that amount of water. All I ended up with was a mess and wet hands.
God Didn’t Design You To Carry It All
This little scenario made me think. At times life can feel a bit like that knocked over jug, can’t it?
Do you ever find yourself scrambling to catch hold of circumstances; to fix this problem, sort out that detail, stop this “thing” happening as a result of that other “thing?”
Yet no matter how fast you move, or how hard you try, your hands just can’t catch it all? There’s just too much on your plate, and it seems something invariably slips through your fingers and you’re left standing in a mess.
That’s because God didn’t design you to carry it all.
We can’t – But God can!
Isaiah 40:12 Asks the rhetorical question “Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale?”
This is our God! Look at the scale of His hands. These hands of His can measure the all the waters of the earth in their palms – the rivers, springs, oceans, rainfall – not one drop escapes His notice. These hands are designed to carry burdens; yours and mine.
If you’re struggling to go it alone today, feeling overwhelmed by life, all your striving, is as futile as trying to catch running water. God says to you “release it all over to me.”
Look at what it says in verses 25-31 of this chapter.
“To whom then will you compare Me That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these heavenly bodies, The One who brings out their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one is missing. Why, O Jacob, do you say, and declare, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become tired or grow weary; There is no searching of His understanding. He gives strength to the weary, And to him who has no might He increases power. Even youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] Will gain new strength and renew their power; They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun]; They will run and not become weary, They will walk and not grow tired.”
We have an incomparable God, creator of every living thing. Our little (created) minds cannot even begin to comprehend His greatness, His power.
And He cares for you and I intimately; He pledges to bear our burdens. All we need to do is hand them over.
“Blessed be the Lord, who bears our burden day by day, The God who is our salvation!” Psalm 68:19
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
