Where Are You Lord?
How often in life have you cried out to God ‘where are you Lord?’
When things go ‘wrong’; Or when we ‘fall’ – when it feels our world has been shaken and turned upside down, God is often the very last one we think of turning to – long after we’ve panic-called our closest friends, our mum, our pastor – just about anyone that will listen other than the One who says ‘come to me’; The One who heals, restores, forgives, and lovingly corrects. Our provider, our Refuge and Strength.
Sometimes it’s God who says to Us “Where are you?”
“But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:9
This verse isn’t implying that God has to look for us. He knows exactly where we are; we can never hide from Him.
It’s the cry of the Father heart of God in response to Adam and Eve’s attitude towards Him. Up to that point, Adam had strolled through the garden having daily intimate one-to-one chats with God. Now Adam and Eve had sinned against God. They’d disobeyed Him and tried to hide because they felt shame. We often do the same. We may not even realise we’re doing it. It’s not necessarily blatant sin, such as Adam and Eve’s, that can cause us to feel disconnected from God.
Every time I go into a panic over a situation, allowing fear to get a grip on me and every time I bring up past sin, that I’ve confessed to God and He’s forgiven, I’m essentially telling God “I don’t trust you. I know that your Word says you’ll come through for me, and that you’re my provider. I know you say you have thrown my sin into ‘the depth of the sea’ (Micah 7:19) but do you know what Lord? Deep down I don’t really believe you”
That attitude breaks down trust between God and myself (on my part) Trust is vital in any relationship.
When we try to hide from God- whether we’re conscious of it or not, and we’re crying out to Him “Where are you?” because we can’t feel His presence, He responds “I’m here, where I always am. Where are you?”
As in: ‘Why are you not running into my arms, that are open wide?’
Not as in ‘ I can’t find you’. You’re never lost to Him!
Thank you Father God that we can always run to you, our Refuge!
“The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.”
Proverbs 18:10
