Home is Where The Heart is
“Lord, through all the generations you have been our home!” Psalm 90:1
From the time I was born until 9 years ago, I calculated recently that I‘ve moved house 22 times, across three countries. That’s a lot of packing up! As a child, it was a lot of upheaval, at times very traumatic; always being the new kid at school. I sometimes looked at people who had spent their entire lives in the same home and felt a little envious. I used to long for what I believed was the stability of a ‘permanent home’.
That is, until I started to understand, a few years ago, that my home isn’t made of bricks and mortar. We’ve all heard that saying ‘home is where the heart is.’ I used to think of it as meaning; home is where family and loved ones are, no matter where in the world that may be. While there is a lot of truth to that, the saying has a new meaning for me these days.
I’ve learned my Father God is my home. He is that permanent home that I had always been longing for.
If you belong to Him, then like me, you’re just passing through. This world isn’t our home.
1 Chronicles 29:15:
“We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors were before us. Our days on earth are like a passing shadow, gone so soon without a trace.”
While I’m here, I can choose to make His presence my dwelling place, my ‘safe place’, and my place of rest and shelter.
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
I can choose to follow wherever He leads me and trust Him when He says “I will never leave you or forsake you”. Wherever His presence is – that’s my home.
God Makes His Home in Us
That God is my home is a huge comfort to me. However, that Almighty God, The One True God, The King of Kings, makes His home in me is both astounding and humbling. But it’s the truth!
“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love...”
“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?”
1 Corinthians 6:19
“I will live among you, and I will not despise you. I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people.”
“Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
In God we have a permanent, forever home. Never displaced – we belong! Our roots are deeply, firmly planted, secure – we are established. We’re citizens of The Kingdom of Heaven!
It really doesn’t matter where we live, geographically or where God leads us to – as long as we remain rooted in Him, God will, as Psalm 90:1 says always be our home.
