Jesus is (not) the ‘Reason for the Season’
I’ve been thinking about that catch phrase we Christians like to use: “Jesus is the reason for the season”.
I understand why we say it, I do it myself; It’s a reaction to all the meaningless tinsel, glitz and modern day political correctness that Christmas has become. Even to the point where the name of Jesus Christ is left completely out of what is supposed to be the celebration of His birth. (Not that Jesus was actually born on 25th December- but that’s for another discussion)
Yesterday, I was thinking about this, and as I read through Isaiah 9:6 a thought occurred to me: Jesus is NOT the reason for the season.
Jesus is NOT the reason for the season. You are. I am.
Saying ‘Jesus is the reason for the season’ is a bit like saying ‘Jesus was born for Jesus’. The reason Jesus came to Earth wasn’t for Jesus.
Here’s the reason for the season:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”. Isaiah 9:6
And also Luke 10:11 ‘And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
How incredible that is! To US a child is born. To US a son is given! “Good news of great joy for all the people”. “A saviour!”
A lost broken world, separated from God was the reason.
Jesus came to restore the broken relationship between us and God.
He came for the redemption of all of creation, so that we may gain salvation and everlasting life if we choose to believe in Him.
You and I the reason for Christmas.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
When we remember that Jesus, King of Heaven came, as a tiny baby, knowing His life would end 33 years later in excruciating agony on a cross, for you, for me, it makes Christmas a time filled with even more wonder and reason to celebrate, doesn’t it?
It’s very humbling to think it, let alone say it out loud. But it’s the truth. Jesus was, is; The Father’s gift to us.
Thank you Jesus, that you came and that we are ‘the reason for the season’.
