“Don’t Be Anxious”

“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? “Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?”

Anxious for nothing
Do you ever feel worried or overwhelmed with anxiety?
I’m not talking about the medical condition of anxiety linked to depression – What I mean is twofold:
a)That sudden feeling of anxiety, perhaps in reaction to a situation, the sense that things are spinning out of control, so you’d better get a handle on them quickly.
b)A nagging, underlying chronic worry. About your children. About your health. About your finances.

Control vs Humility
The reason we feel anxious is because we feel a loss of control. We feel anxious when we are trying to control things in our lives that, in fact we have no control over.
When things go awry our need to ‘fix it’ kicks in. It’s very easy to quote that lovely phrase ‘let go and let God’, when everything is going well, but do we really do that?

The opposite of worry and anxiety is humility. When I’m so worried about a situation that I actually try to take control of it myself, I’m being prideful- worse than that, I’m trying to do The Lord’s job for Him; in a way I’m saying by my actions, “Lord you aren’t acting fast enough” Or “I’m not sure I trust you to handle this”.
How arrogant.
This is what The Lord has to say about it:

“Don’t let the wise brag of their wisdom. Don’t let heroes brag of their exploits. Don’t let the rich brag of their riches. If you brag, brag of this and this only: That you understand and know me. I’m God , and I act in loyal love. I do what’s right and set things right and fair, and delight in those who do the same things. These are my trademarks.”
Jeremiah 9:23

Two things I CAN control:
a) My initial reaction – the words that come out of my mouth.
What’s your first reaction when you receive potentially unsettling news? When that letter arrives from the bank or the doctor?
In all honesty mine is often in the “Oh no, it’s a disaster!” camp.
b) I can make the conscious decision to hand over complete control of the situation to God, trusting in His Faithfulness and Goodness to handle it, just as He promises to do.

We are not told to just sit back and take a hands-off approach; we have our bit to do. Pray. Philippians 4:6 tells us: Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Why, Oh why do we worry when we have an All Powerful, Almighty God who loves and cares for us, right down to the most minuscule detail of our lives?

1Peter 5:6-7
‘So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.’

  1. Even in cases of the medical condition of anxiety linked to depression cognitive therapy takes a similar path. Although it doesn’t point to God it does point toward the idea of not worrying through assessing the situation and discovering if there is really something to be worried about and if so what can you do to address it. Add God to this process and it means that everything can be addressed. I do not want to make it sound simple because those with the medical condition of anxiety linked to depression have to still struggle to apply these tools but I do want to say that the addition of faith in Jesus adds so much to the journey of someone with this condition, at least it has for me.
