Eph 4:30b “…by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
A few times a week, I post small packages to places all over the world, containing jewellery that I make and sell. I usually put a small, hand-written, personal note into each parcel, addressed to the buyer.
Yesterday, after I had posted a little package, I arrived home from the post office to find the note that was supposed to have gone into the envelope on the kitchen table. Silly me, I’d forgotten to put it into the parcel! I know from past experience that it would be a waste of time going back to the post office to ask for my parcel back so that I could put the letter into it. They wouldn’t have been allowed to give it to me.
I’ve been told that once a letter has been processed, stamped /sealed and put into the Mail bag for collection, it officially becomes Royal Mail property until it’s delivered to the person it’s addressed to. No one else but that person is allowed to open it.
I stood there looking at the note on the kitchen table, remembering that Post Office rule and I suddenly thought about Ephesians 4:30b where it says that we “were sealed for the day of redemption.”
If you are a Christian, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit. You belong to Jesus Christ. No changes can be made ‘after the fact’. No extra little ‘notes’ can added in or taken out by anyone, including yourself. You will be ‘delivered’ to Jesus, the addressee, the one who purchased you (with his own blood) and he is the ONLY one authorised to open that seal. No one else! (See Revelation 5)
So often our own thoughts condemn us. Or we keep looking to our past with regret, wishing we could undo things. Sometimes we even try to ‘add’ to our salvation by hoping to please God more by ‘being good’, or ‘doing’. But we need to remember that all these things are as futile as trying to get a parcel back from Royal Mail to put that extra letter in! It’s done! Sealed and posted. Nothing more can be added, and nothing taken out.
Ephesians 1:13-14 “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
When I post things, very occasionally a letter or parcel might get lost or damaged in the post, but in God’s salvation plan, you can be sure that no ‘Sealed One’ will be lost. I like the way the Message Bible translates this verse: John 10:28 “Jesus answered, “They are protected from the Destroyer for good. No one can steal them from out of my hand. The Father who put them under my care is so much greater than the Destroyer and Thief. No one could ever get them away from him. I and the Father are one heart and mind.”
Revelation 5:9 “And they sang a new song with these words: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”
So be encouraged today, Sealed Ones of His!
