Keeping in Step
Galatians 5:25 ESV“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
Yesterday morning, I saw a living, breathing example of this verse. I was driving, and had indicated to turn right, off the main road. As I slowed down, I saw a man and his little son, out for their morning jog, about to cross the road I was going to turn into. The man saw me, and
slowed his pace, while instinctively putting a protective hand on his little son’s shoulder, to draw his attention to the potential danger. In the same moment, he looked over his own shoulder, to see if any other cars were coming in the other direction. When he saw that I had stopped and was obviously going to let them cross the road before turning, he gave his son’s shoulder a gentle tap and the two of them ran on again.
This scene only lasted a few seconds, but it has imprinted itself on my heart. In the moments following, as I drove away, I heard the Holy Spirit say to me; “that’s how I work in your life, when you keep in step with me and you don’t go running off ahead.” (As I’m often prone to do)
Isaiah 30:21 also comes to mind “Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.”
