2 Timothy 3:5 ESV “having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.”
A Form of godliness
My mobile phone, like most modern phones, has a preinstalled App, that I’ve never bothered to use. I had a look through it yesterday. This App can help me count how many steps I take every day, give me a work-out plan, monitor my heart rate, keep an eye on my nutrition intake, and it has a section called ‘Mindfulness’. This piqued my curiosity so I took a peek at what the creators of the App considered ‘mindfulness’ to be.
On opening the section, there’s a couple of paragraphs spouting some drivel about sitting quietly and observing your thoughts from a distance etc etc. There’s another section where you can record how much time you have spent in ‘mindfulness’ every day.
This got me thinking; How tragic it is that people are so starved spiritually, so distant from God, that they are willing to fill that void with an empty ‘type of spirituality’; with an App on their phone, when they could connect with the LIVING GOD.
The Best ‘App’
What if there was an ‘App’ for spiritual fitness? (That is, Christian, Spirituality, as opposed to general ‘spirituality’) This App could monitor your ‘spiritual health’ and keep you on the right track spiritually, physically, financially and in ALL your interpersonal relationships, and, best of all, connect you with a real, living God?
Good news. There is! It’s called THE BIBLE. I’m not speaking, necessarily, about an actual App, although there are some very good Bible Apps for phones and tablets and I use one myself. However just a good, old fashioned ‘hard copy’ will do!
We can ‘download’ it onto the hardrive of our hearts
Proverbs 3:1-8 describes it perfectly:
“My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation. Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.”
‘Store my commands in your heart’. Or, as the ESV translates it, “write them on the tablet of your heart.” In modern terms – “download God’s Word onto the hard-drive of your heart.”
2 Peter 1:3 “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.”
“Come to me – I will give you rest”
Far from sitting by ourselves, with a cold impersonal mobile phone App, meditating on our own thoughts and being “mindful”, we have an invitation from a wonderful, real, living God, Who knows us inside out, to come and sit with Him, share our thoughts with Him and leave life’s heavy burdens at his feet. And it’s not a one-way conversation. He listens and He speaks.
Matthew 11:28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
