The Faithfulness of God
Attributes of God Series Part 2 – God is Faithful
“Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.” (Deuteronomy 7:9)
There’s a song we used to sing as children, that went “My God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that He cannot do”
I love that song! It’s good to know that nothing and no one can catch match the wondrous power of our almighty God. I know with all my heart that this is true. However, did you know that there is one thing that God cannot do? In fact it’s impossible for him to do this thing.
Wait! Before you stone me as a heretic, it says so in The Bible….
Hebrews 6:18 “So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.”
God cannot and will not, lie.
Why? Because it goes against His very nature and character. He will never break a promise. Every covenant He has made will be kept. Every foretelling has or will come true.
Did you know that accounts of covenants between God and His people can be found approximately 277 times in the Bible?
That’s testimony after testimony of God’s faithfulness and his faithfulness is still proven in the lives of His children today.
His Faithfulness never ends
When we say God is faithful, it means He is totally trustworthy and perfectly faithful. Isaiah wrote:
“O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.” (Isaiah 25:1)
Jeremiah wrote: ‘“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV)
He is The God who keeps His promises. We can trust Him because He is the only one who is totally trustworthy. As human beings, however well intentioned we might be, we are, after all only human. We all at some time, break promises, tell the occasional “white lie” (there’s no such thing, by the way. A lie is a lie) “Not a single person on earth is always good and never sins.” (Ecclesiastes 7:20)
But God? He is Faithfulness personified!
It is impossible for God to fail you. It is impossible for God to break His promises to you. It is impossible for God to let you down or lie to you.
God is utterly faithful. Completely trustworthy.
“For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does.” Psalms 33:4 NLT
